Do You Need Underlayment for Vinyl Plank Flooring?

It depends on the plank. If your luxury vinyl plank (LVP) comes with an attached pad, you should not add separate underlayment, because doubling up creates too much cushion and can damage the locking joints. If your plank has no attached pad, a thin underlayment can add comfort, reduce noise, and provide a needed moisture barrier, especially over a concrete slab. In short: read what the plank already has, then match the underlayment to the subfloor underneath.

Getting this one detail wrong is a common cause of clicking, flexing, or failed floors. Getting it right is simple once you know the two questions that matter.

Question 1: Does Your Plank Already Have a Pad?

Many modern rigid-core LVP products, especially SPC lines, ship with an attached foam or cork pad on the back. If yours does:

  • Do not add another underlayment. Stacking pads makes the floor too spongy, and that extra give stresses the click joints until they separate or crack.
  • You may still need a thin moisture barrier over concrete, but only a barrier film, not a cushioned pad. The manufacturer will specify.

If your plank has a bare back with no pad, then a separate underlayment is usually a good idea.

Question 2: What Is the Subfloor?

The subfloor decides what kind of underlayment you need:

  • Over concrete (slabs and basements): a moisture barrier is important. Michigan slabs can wick moisture, and even waterproof LVP wants a vapor barrier underneath to protect the room, subfloor, and any padding. See best basement flooring for Michigan homes.
  • Over wood subfloor: moisture is less of a concern, so underlayment is mostly about comfort and sound. A thin foam or felt pad softens the step and quiets the room.
  • Over an existing hard floor: often no underlayment is used at all, provided the surface is flat and solid.

What Underlayment Actually Does

A good underlayment can:

  • Quiet the floor, cutting the hollow, clicky sound bare LVP can make.
  • Add a touch of comfort underfoot, which matters in kitchens and standing areas.
  • Block moisture from a concrete slab when it includes a vapor barrier.
  • Smooth out minor imperfections in an otherwise flat subfloor.

What it cannot do is fix a bad subfloor. Dips, humps, and debris still telegraph through, which is why prep comes first. See why subfloor prep makes or breaks a flooring job.

The Most Common Mistake

The single most frequent error is adding a cushioned underlayment under a plank that already has an attached pad. It feels nice for a week, then the joints begin to flex, gap, and click. When in doubt, follow the plank manufacturer’s instructions to the letter, because ignoring them usually voids the warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does luxury vinyl plank need underlayment? Only if the plank does not already have an attached pad. Many rigid-core LVP products come with a pad built on the back, and those should not get extra underlayment. Bare-backed planks usually benefit from a thin underlayment for comfort, sound, and moisture protection.

Can you put underlayment under LVP that already has a pad attached? No. Adding a cushioned underlayment under a plank that already has an attached pad creates too much give, which stresses and eventually separates the locking joints. It can also void the warranty. Use only the moisture barrier the manufacturer specifies, if any.

Do you need a moisture barrier for vinyl plank over concrete? Usually yes. Concrete slabs, including basement floors, can wick moisture, so a vapor barrier under LVP is recommended even though the plank is waterproof. In West Michigan basements, that barrier protects the room and the subfloor over time.

Does underlayment make vinyl plank quieter? Yes. A quality underlayment absorbs sound and reduces the hollow, clicky noise that bare LVP can make, especially over a wood subfloor. It also adds a little comfort underfoot. Just do not use it on planks that already include an attached pad.
