Waterproof LVP Installation for Michigan Homes
Waterproof luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a rigid-core vinyl floor that will not swell, warp or delaminate when it gets wet, which makes it the most practical hardwood-look floor for Michigan entryways, basements, kitchens and bathrooms. Freedom Flooring & Design brings samples to your home, confirms the subfloor is ready, and installs it with the same team that measured it.

What makes an LVP floor 'waterproof'
Standard vinyl plank is water-resistant on the surface. Waterproof LVP adds a rigid core (commonly labeled SPC, stone-polymer composite, or WPC, wood-polymer composite) that does not absorb water, plus a click-lock joint that keeps water from sitting in the seams. The wear layer on top, measured in mils, is what resists scratches from grit, pet claws and chair legs. For a Michigan entry or mudroom we generally point homeowners toward a rigid core with a thicker wear layer; Nolan will show you the difference in your hands at the consultation.
Why Michigan winters are the real test
Entryways and mudrooms
Boots carry in slush, road salt and sand from November through March. Salt crystals act like sandpaper underfoot and standing meltwater finds every seam. A rigid-core waterproof plank with a solid wear layer shrugs that off, and a doormat plus a quick dry-mop keeps it looking new.
Basements
Below-grade slabs in West Michigan carry moisture and cold. Waterproof LVP does not care about humidity swings the way wood does, and it installs over a properly prepared concrete slab with the right underlayment. It is the floor we recommend most for finished basements, playrooms and lower-level family rooms.
Kitchens, baths and laundry
Spills, pet bowls, dishwashers and washing machines all eventually leak. A waterproof floor means a leak is a cleanup, not a replacement.
Our waterproof LVP installation standard
- In-home consultation: samples on your floor, in your light.
- Subfloor and moisture check: we evaluate concrete or wood subfloors and flag anything that needs correction before planks go down.
- Acclimation and layout: planks rest in the room, then we plan the run direction and transitions.
- Install: underlayment where the product calls for it, planks locked tight, expansion gaps respected, clean transitions at doorways.
- Finish and cleanup: baseboards or quarter round, walls protected throughout, dust contained, and a final walkthrough with you.
Waterproof LVP vs other floors for wet rooms
| Floor | How it handles wet rooms |
|---|---|
| Waterproof LVP | Hardwood look, fully waterproof core, warm underfoot, click-lock install over most subfloors. |
| Tile | Fully waterproof, cold and hard underfoot, grout needs maintenance, longer install. |
| Laminate | Hardwood look, but most laminate cores swell when wet; only for dry rooms unless labeled waterproof. |
| Hardwood | Beautiful, but not for basements, baths or wet entries. |
| Carpet | Best for bedrooms and stairs, not for wet rooms. |
Waterproof LVP FAQ
Can waterproof LVP go directly over a concrete basement floor?
Usually yes, once the slab is clean, flat and dry enough. We check moisture and flatness first, then install with the underlayment the product requires.
Will it look like real hardwood?
Modern rigid-core planks carry printed wood grain with embossed texture and matte finishes. In your own light, next to your trim, most homeowners cannot tell at a glance. That is exactly why we bring the samples to you.
Is waterproof LVP good with dogs?
Yes. The waterproof core handles accidents and water bowls, and a thicker wear layer resists claw scratches. Pair it with an area rug where your dog likes to run.
How long does waterproof LVP installation take?
Most rooms are finished in a day or two; whole main levels take longer. Nolan confirms the timeline at the consultation.
Does it need to acclimate?
Rigid-core planks are more stable than wood, but we still let product rest in the room before install and respect the manufacturer's expansion gaps.
